Candi Dasa

about Candi Dasa

Candidasa is an unusual destination within Bali, neither a true beach resort nor a complete cultural experience. But it offers a good blend of both of those, plus a large measure of relaxation for those eager to chill out in an easy-going, inexpensive environment.

The reason it does not qualify as a true beach destination is that many resorts here don't have a sandy beach, or have a beach of pebbles and stones, not soft sand. Some once had sand, but have now been left with only a protective wall as the ocean is clearly determined to chew into the Bali coast here.

Off-shore wave breakers and sand traps have been built along the coast here to hold off the hungry ocean waves, with the result that sand has gathered in very selective areas only, leaving most with rocks and walls. If you want a real sandy beach, check the satellite image blow our beach maps. Both the man-made barriers and the collected sand can be seen.

Candidasa's other major attraction is the fact that here is a traditional Balinese community with less stress from tourism than found in the busier areas of South Bali. This, plus the fact that it is very tranquil and offers relaxation, is enough to attract many visitors. This could make a great romantic hideaway for couples.

Our Candidasa East map glows the hotter red, indicating that it has more qualified beachfront resorts. The majority of beach accommodations here are budget beach cottages, with a few more comfortable ones in the 3-star range.

The road behind the beachfront resorts has numerous mini-marts, restaurants and ATM machines.
